That starts with walking the existing piping before the first cut is made. Gas piping, air piping, process piping, and drain, waste and vent lines all get mapped against what the new line has to feed, so a tie in lands where it is supposed to and nothing gets crossed.

Equipment upgrades and extra process line runs
New equipment on a plant floor usually means the piping around it has to be rebuilt, not just reconnected. Water piping replacement, added process piping, and extra drain, waste and vent runs are the common pieces of an equipment change, sized to what the new equipment actually needs rather than what the old line happened to carry.
Sewer jetting and backflow device testing round out the maintenance side of the same work. A jetted line runs clean under a new equipment load, and backflow testing keeps a cross connection on a new process line from becoming a problem for the rest of the plant's water system.
